Hair Tips & Care Guide

Simple, herbal care for textured hair — with real-life tips that actually help.

Caring for textured hair shouldn’t feel like a full-time job. This guide is here to help you troubleshoot common concerns (dryness, breakage, scalp issues, thinning edges) with simple steps you can stick to. No complicated routines. No 12-product pressure. Just practical care.

Start Here: What’s Your Hair Asking For?

Raise your hand if…

  • your hair is “dry” 10 minutes after you moisturize 🙋🏽‍♀

  • you’re growing hair… but it keeps breaking so it looks the same length 🙋🏽

  • your scalp is flaky but also somehow oily?? 🙋🏽‍♀️

  • your edges disappear after every braid season 🙋🏽‍♀️

Good. You’re in the right place.

The 3-Part Rule (This solves a lot)

Most hair issues come down to one (or more) of these:

  1. Moisture (adding hydration)

  2. Seal (locking it in)

  3. Low tension (less pulling, less stress)

If you do those consistently, your hair will usually behave better.

1) Dry Hair & “Why is my hair always thirsty?”

Quick check:
If your hair feels dry soon after you moisturize, the issue is often retaining moisture—not getting it.

What to do

  • Moisturize on damp hair. Water helps products spread and absorb better.

  • Seal right after. Oils/butters help lock moisture in.

  • Choose lighter products for fine hair, richer butters for thicker hair.

  • Don’t over-wash. Washing too often can strip oils and worsen dryness.

Try this simple routine:
Damp hair → moisture product → seal (light oil or butter) → style

Don't raise your hand for this one but do you moisturize on bone-dry hair and hope for miracles?
(We’ve all tried it. Damp hair works better.)

2) BREAKAGE & WEAK HAIR

Truth: If your hair is breaking, it’s hard to “see growth” — because you’re losing length at the same speed you’re gaining it.

What to do

  • Detangle gently, in sections. Rushing = snapping.

  • Detangle when hair is moisturized. Dry detangling is a setup.

  • Reduce manipulation. Constant combing, brushing, re-styling = stress.

  • Trim when needed. Split ends don’t heal; they travel up the strand.

Detangling rules that save hair:

  • Start from ends → work upward

  • Use fingers first if possible

  • Be patient (your hair remembers how you treat it)

If your comb is winning every time… we need a new strategy. 😅

3) Thinning Edges & “My edges used to be here…”

Edges are delicate. Treat them like fine lace.

What to do

  • Avoid tight styles. If it’s pulling, it’s damaging.

  • Limit friction. Scarves, rough pillowcases, constant brushing.

  • Massage gently (not aggressively). You’re stimulating, not fighting.

  • Consistency matters. A little care regularly beats “once in a while.”

Edge-saving habits:

  • Low-tension styles

  • Satin scarf/ bonnet

  • Minimal gel and brushing

  • Give edges breaks between styles

Raise your hand if your edges disappear after braids… then you blame the braider AND the universe. 🙋🏽‍♀️
(Usually it’s tension + time + repeat styles.)

Important note: If thinning is sudden, patchy, or worsening, check with a dermatologist to rule out underlying conditions.

4) Scalp Problems: Flakes, Itch, Buildup

A healthy scalp supports healthy hair. Period.

First, identify the type

Flakes + itch? Could be dryness or irritation.
Greasy + flakes? Could be buildup (or a scalp condition).
Tender scalp? Often tension or inflammation.

What to do

  • Cleanse regularly (not harshly) to avoid buildup.

  • Don’t layer heavy products on dirty scalp. That’s how buildup forms.

  • Oil is not shampoo. Oils are great — but scalp still needs cleansing.

  • Massage oils in small amounts. More oil ≠ more growth.

If you scratch your scalp and product rolls off like eraser shavings… that’s buildup.

5) Protective Styles (Done Right)

Protective styles help when they’re truly protective.

Protective style checklist

✅ Not tight
✅ Hair moisturized before install
✅ Scalp still cared for during
✅ Not left in forever
✅ Edges not constantly slicked down

Rule of thumb:
If your style hurts today, it’s damage tomorrow.

6) Hair Not Growing? Or Just Not Showing?

Most people are growing hair — it’s retention that’s the issue.

Ask Yourself:

  • Am I breaking more than I retain?

  • Am I moisturizing consistently?

  • Are my styles too tight or too frequent?

  • Am I over-manipulating?

Growth + retention = length you can actually see.

  • 1x weekly or bi-weekly: cleanse + condition

  • 2–4x weekly (as needed): light moisture + seal

  • Daily (optional): scalp care for thinning areas (light, not heavy)

  • Always: low tension + gentle handling

Consistency beats complexity.
