Hey there! I’m Isatou. I come from the vibrant culture of The Gambia in West Africa, where hair is celebrated like art. Growing up, I was surrounded by intricate styles and beautiful looks — but not all of them were gentle on our hair. Like many of us, I went through my share of hair mishaps. From harsh chemicals to non-protective styles and hot tools, I tried it all. And my hair paid the price. Breakage, thinning, and stressed strands became far too familiar.

 So I took the leap — the big chop. And wow… what a revelation. For the first time, I saw my hair’s true beauty, with curls in all shapes and forms. I couldn’t believe it — whose head was that?! My natural curls were shining through for the very first time.

 Then came my lightbulb moment: if I wanted strong, healthy hair, I needed to be intentional. That meant returning to my roots — literally and culturally. I knew it was time to let go of my chemically relaxed hair. I had been relaxing for so long that I barely remembered my natural texture. I didn’t know what it looked like, how it felt, or what it needed.

 So, I took the leap — the big chop.

The moment I cut off my damaged hair and relaxed ends, everything changed. I saw curls in all shapes and forms — beautiful, natural, and mine. I couldn’t believe it… whose head was that?! My real texture was shining through for the very first time.

That journey of rediscovery is what sparked the creation of Hair My Story.
